~*~A few helpful home remedies for the goats in your life~*~

If your anything like me, for one, you don't like to give your animals alot of chemicals, and two, if you can make it with a few things from the kitchen cupboard...you will!

Here are a few home remedy recipes I have picked up from various other goat owners that just might come in handy. Be it a every day choir or an emergency situation, you just never know when you made need one of these!

~Homemade Udder/Teat Dip Wash~

(This recipe is from Molly at www.fiascofarm.com)

Make only enough of this wash/dip for each milking.  It does not keep.  The bleach disperses fairly quickly and you can’t guarantee the mixture’s sanitizing strength/ability after a few hours.  To make an udder wash/teat dip just mix:

* 1 oz  (2 T) of bleach

* one quart of water
* a drop of dish detergent

I like to use  Dawn dish washing detergent, it's the best I have found.  Like Bounty paper towels, I'd never use anything else.  Dawn is safe to mix with bleach.  You must be very careful when mixing bleach with other products because toxic vapors can result.
To use, wash udder with wash/dip and wipe dry with a clean paper towel. Milk the goat. After milking, dip the teats in the teat dip and let "air dry".

~*~Homemade milk replacer~*~

Make your own milk replacer, for when you
end up having to use something other then mommy juice. This is Barbara's recipe and is very easy and
the kids won't scour.
1 Gallon Whole Milk

1 can Evaporated Milk

1 Cup Buttermilk

1 beaten egg

Pour off about a third of the whole milk and set aside. Add your
evaporated milk and buttermilk and beaten egg and fill back up with the
milk you set aside.

Recipe #1

Apply lard to the udder followed by a generous handful of cayenne pepper. The cayenne does not burn either your hand or the udder. Cayenne is available in bulk in health food stores much cheaper than in supermarkets.

If there is a nursing kid/calf, don't apply this to the teats.

Recipe #2

Supportive treatment means frequent milking and massage with whatever salve you choose.People have had frequent success with tea tree oil and aloe or  tea tree oil in olive oil.

Frequent milking and massage with hot towels is key.

Recipe #3

Aloe vera gel (a standard sized one from the store).

2 ounces of a good tea tree essential oil.

Mix well and shake before use.

Slather the infected quarter/s well and massage in as often as you like. I do it with every time I strip and massage.

If you are using it in cold weather I would slather something over top like winter udder cream, since I think it would leave the udder cold and not be helpful in treatment. The lard/ cayanne might work better as a winter topical mastitis treatment.

~*~Pink eye treatments~*~

We had a horrible time this last fall 2004 with pink eye here in Nebraska, so along the way I found some very interesting and useful recipes/treatments and tips for dealing with this pesky infection!

Treatment #1

The tipical call for tetraycycline ointment can be much less exspensive and most likely not even call for you to leave your house. A vet told me you can use a triple antibiotic (such as Neosporine or even that great cheap Walmart brand!) instead!

Treatment #2

This one threw me for a loop...but worked like a charm! If you have a goat in milk, squirt some fresh raw milk into the infected eyes! The milk carries ALL of the antibodies for any bacterias on your land! You may need to repeat the treatment a couple times, but you will see improvement right away.
