Raines Ranch Nubians & Boers

CAE Negitive Nubian and Boer goats in SW Nebraska

Just Kidding....

I had a chance recently to take pictures of a typical labor and delivery of one of our first time kidders Me-Me. I figured it was a perfect chance to show new comers to goats just how things usually progress!

Picture #1 shows the begining of early active labor......

Notice the way she is holding her tail and how her tail head looks?? She is getting ready at this point, contracting and moving the first kid into position.

Picture #2 shows how her rear and udder looks....

Photobucket

She is tightly bagged and her back-end is very swollen and puffy.

Picture #3  shows her now laying down to have a stronger contraction.....

Photobucket

You can see how she is stretching her neck out and stiffening her legs.

Picture #4 shows one of her first pushes.......

Photobucket

You can see how her back-end swells out from the pressure of the water bag.

Picture #5 shows the first foot coming out.....

Photobucket

Pretty much speaks for its self, wont be long now!

Picture #6 shows the second foot.....

Picture #7 shows both feet now and the start of a little nose....

At this point I had to put down the camera and help clean off this little ones mouth and nose!

Picture #8 , #9 and #10 shows our first little doeling born!!

Kidding supplies

Heres a little list of items I like to keep close at hand when kidding season nears!

  1.  Nutri-Drench for dairy goats, I give all my newborns and new mommas a drenching just to start everyone off right!
  2. Iodine for navels along with disposable dixie cups to dip them with.
  3. Old towels and newspaper, newspaper is great for getting the super gooey stuff off and towels for drying afterwards.
  4. Latex gloves and KY jelly, just in case I have to retrieve a kid.
  5. Old blow dryer, helps when its super cold to dry them off and warm them up!
  6. A camera to take those first baby pictures of course!

Welcome
